I have been doing some research about holidays in Mauritius and I came across a website that says that on departure, visitors have to pay a tax of 500MRU.
Is this true? If it is, for what reason is that?

Update: You no longer have to pay the departure tax as it's included in your airfare.

I think that's been abolished now. There are lots of outdated information on Mauritius on the Internet and most websites have copied text for text the same article. Anyway I've sent an email to Mauritius Airport to see if that departure tax of Rs500 is still payable when leaving the country. I'm not very optimistic on receiving an answer from them because in Mauritius emails is not yet a proper way of communication but I've looked everywhere on the Airport of Mauritius website but couldn't find any mention of the tax, so I assume it's no longer applicable.

Surprisingly, I got a reply to my email from someone working at the airport of Mauritius and the reply was as follows:

"All charges and taxes applicable are included in your airfare."

So it means everywhere on the Internet, websites are using outdated information!
