Will insurance companies pay out for damages caused by the recent flood in Mauritius?

Many cars have been damaged beyond repair and a lot of businesses have been affected. Products have been lost and offices ruined. So I'm guessing that's going to be a lot of money for the insurers if they settle every single claim. Maybe they will try to reject some claims put forward and refuse to pay and pass this as an Act of God or natural calamity which is not in their control? What do you think?

Some people I know who have had their cars damaged do not have flood cover so they are going to have to pay out of their own pocket to get the damage repaired.

I checked my policy as I had no clue what it covered and I too have flood cover but I have an excess of Rs10,000 to pay if I make a claim.

As far as I know, they will only accept a claim where there's flood protection on the insurance policy. Many comprehensive policies (assurance tous risques) have this included as standard but you will need to check your documents carefully because some companies offer this as an option. I've checked mine and I've got a Cyclone and Flood clause included. See picture below:

For offices/shops which have incurred damages as a result of the torrential rain, they will need to check with their respective insurers to see whether their policy covers only the building premises or contents only (or both).

The Financial Services Commission (FSC) has ordered all insurance companies to have a complaints coordinator for all their policyholders. So if anyone is not happy with the decision of their insurers (in case their claims are rejected), they can make a complaint which should be dealt with professionally and within 30 days.
