When you check in your baggage at the airport, it’s bound to have a rough journey before you see it again. It will be thrown here and there and no one really cares about it except you. So if you wanted to protect your luggage, a good idea is to get it wrapped in plastic (a sort of cling film) before you check it in.

I know the service is not free, so I called the first number I got off the Internet for Air Mauritius to enquire about the costs. The person on the other line had no idea and told me that I should call the reservation department instead. Once through reservations, the agent said that they dealt only with seat/ticket reservations and therefore she wouldn’t know these things. I told her that I was given this number by someone else working for Air Mauritius and I really needed to know this information. She put me on hold and tried to get some information from a colleague and when she came back, she told me I would need to ring AML (Airports of Mauritius Co. Ltd) on 603 6000.

I tried the number and this time I got lucky. The guy told me it costs Rs125 for each piece of luggage. I asked whether it’s the same price for a pram too and he said yes. The price also included VAT and is payable in cash directly to the person doing the wrapping.

When I got to the airport, the plastic wrapping service was just in front on the entrance. Although I already knew the pricing, I wanted to confirm with the staff and to my surprise, they said it was Rs400 to wrap the pram. I said I called earlier and I was told it was Rs125. The guy brought an information sheet and showed me that a baby cot/pram costs Rs400 while any other piece of luggage is Rs125.

I could not let the pram go unwrapped, so I paid without any further argument. I had to call 3 different numbers only to be misinformed!
