With fibre optic cables, you have less noise (interference) and can get way faster Internet speeds than with telephones lines. At the moment, the maximum speed for Internet in Mauritius is 2Mb (residential) but there's a project that the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has in mind which could provide us with better surfing at home.

It's the introduction of fibre optic cables as a means of communication throughout the island. We'll be able to achieve internet connectivity at speeds of 10Mb and enjoy broadband as it should be.

But will that be affordable for everyone? Even ADSL is expensive at the moment!

I can't wait to get fibre optic cable in my area so that I can at last get a decent internet connection. The problem though is that this is a massive change which would require a lot of underground work for the network to operate and one year completion date could be a bit too optimistic unless they plan on having fibre optic cables only in busy areas to start with.

Good news, hopefully this will become reality. However, I suppose this will be for business in the first phase and probably not for private users until well after the 1 year period. Maybe this will also stimulate competition amongst ISPs and bring tariffs to a reasonable level.

The government said they expect internet prices to go down because there'll be more competition but we just have to wait and see whether this project is going to materialise or not first and whether the fees will really go down.
