when talking about laws, There are 3 mains job you can work as:
1) Solicitor Avouer)
2) Barrister ( Avocat)
3) Legal adviser( conseiller legal)
A Solicitor- is someone who deal with all legal paper works
A Barrister- is someone who fight your case at court etc..
The criteria You need to work in those field:
1) To be a solicitor
-LLB ( 3-4 years)
- Bar exam ( It is compulsory to do this in Mauritius if you want to work in mru) (1 year)
- pupillage ( 6 months at a Solicitor (Avouer) and 3 months at an Barrister (Avocat))
( pupillage is like being under the supervision of a barrister)
- take an oath
[made by the Council of The Mauritius Law Society under section 17 (1) of The Mauritius Law Society Act] 1. An Attorney shall on taking the oath of office, endeavour to maintain the tradition, high integrity, honour and dignity of the profession and encourage other Attorneys to act similarly, in the practice of his profession and his private life, refrain from conduct which is detrimental to the profession or may tend to discredit it.
2) Barrister
-LLB ( 3-4 years)
-Bar exam (1 year) ( it can be in Mru or maybe England or something)
- pupillage ( 6 months at an Barrister( avocat) and 3 months at a Solicitor( Avouer)
- take the oath
3) Legal Adviser( Conseiller legal)
- LLB ( 3-4 years)
But it is advisable to do a LLM (e.g laws on Human right)
You have more questions, don't hesitate to ask me, I will be happy to help you
It depends on the university you decide to study.
Mauritius Universities take 4 years to complete a bachelor compare to British universities which take 3 years to complete.( but the former are cheaper than the latter!)
( A British university degree is recognized and is more valuable globally compare to a Mauritian one)
Different universities have different tuition fees.
But I can give you an approximation( according to Middlesex University Mauritius)
Bachelor in law
Rs 230,000/year (you can get payment facilities)
( 230,000 x 3 = 690,000mur)
There might be other British Universities Branches in Mauritius that might offer the degree at a cheaper price. :)
Dear Roseofuniverse,
I would like to know how much it will cost for to become a lawyer or attorney like the bar course/vocational only. I already know the degree fees.
