Migrating to Mauritius

This is a follow up of a question i noted that was asked in 2002. Fascinating to read the above answers.

I haven't lived on Mauritius for over twenty years though I am planning to return this year.

Interesting the breakdown appears wee bit lower than what I expected. However I do note that the responses are quite a few years old now.

I would like to ask the same question again, bearing in mind that we are in 2016? How much would it suffice to live a decent and modest life in Mauritius.
I don't have a place to live, I don't have a car and will have to find a job or start working for myself.

I have put a figure of Rs100000? Any thoughts?

And yes I don't go to pubs restaurants, hotels and I am not a vegan. But I enjoy the simple life in Mauritius. I am hoping to buy a plot of land and construct my own little place.

In addition, I have realised that it's almost impossible to find a decent and trustworthy builder in Mauritius. Suggestions would be helpful here.
Many thanks.

What question are you referring to that was asked in 2002? Clever Dodo was launched in 2011.

Anyway, a modest lifestyle is subjective. What you may think is modest for you may not be the same for me.

Let me try to give you an indication about houses. My brother bought a plot of land several years ago in Coromandel. That piece of land is now worth Rs2M. He started construction on it 2015/2016 and it has cost him around Rs2M for a 3/4 bedroom house (bedrooms and bathroom/toilet upstairs) and kitchen, living room and toilets on ground floor.

My experience of living in Mauritius for 2 years (2011-2013) shows that you can get a 3 bed house/apartment for around Rs10,000 in Port-Louis (as long as you are Mauritian) and you're likely to spend Rs10,000 for shopping (toiletries, food etc). You can spend less depending on your style of living, whether you shop at the supermarkets or bazaar, how often you buy clothes (branded or not) and whether you eat out a lot.

Utilities round up to Rs3,500. Water, electricity and high internet connection. Petrol was around Rs2,500 but that's mainly because I was working from home and would go out driving round the island at weekends mostly.

So I'd say Rs30,000-35,000 is enough if you live a rather modest life as a Mauritian (not a foreigner though).

Check out my write up on cost of living in Mauritius for more prices.

Hope that helps you.

Gices hello there and thank you for your helpful response. However, it raises more questions for me than provide answers.
I am still doubtful about the figure you have quoted. Though you may be right, but from my yearly experiences of staying in Mauritius between 10-14 days each time, I have to say that Rs35-40000 sounds a meagre amount. Excluding my hotels/car rental cost, just the cost of day to day activities cost me nearly double that amount.
I am also quite intrigued to know why you had to leave Mauritius after staying there for two years. Is it that you could not adjust yourself to the lifestyle/cultural difference or is it something else.
I would to talk you sometimes about it, as this is a major decision that I am going to make.
You could either call me on 07500888521 or give me a shout, and I shall call you back.
It will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
