Living conditions were really bad and for those who wanted to escape, there was the fear of capture as well. If caught, they would be tortured and faced death as well.
Whether in Mauritius or anywhere else, slaves were treated badly. They were forced to work more than they were physically capable of and were often malnourished and sometimes left to starve as a form of punishment. They were deprived of education and were beaten without reason. They lived in extremely bad conditions and as a result were subjected to all kinds of illnesses and diseases. They suffered mental and physical abuse.
