I don't know why my laptop is so slow, my anti virus is up to date (AVG, I guess that it's an ok one...??) but every other day it just freezes up and I have to remove the battery from the back to get it started at all, what am I supposed to do?Thanks.

Give more details like you system specs.
Add more RAM: you should have at least 2GB of memory nowadays.
I suggest you remove all startup applications.
Press Win R, Type 'msconfig', Startup tab and disable all.
Restart and it should run 10-60 seconds faster
AVG sucks. I suggest that you use other alternatives:
Eset NOD32 or Microsoft Security Essentials
The best thing to do is to format all your hard drives and install windows clean (win XP or Win 7, NOT VISTA) to get rid of all the viruses. If you have an OEM version, use your recovery disk.

As an IT tech, i would advise you to have it serviced then do a complete system clean up, removing bogus apps etc...

How old is the laptop? if greater than 3years old with a very minimum specifications, then high time you get a new laptop with core i-5 or core i-7. Better yet, get a desktop PC so you could upgrade when needed. AVG is good if you only uses internet for emails and some casual readings and surfing.

I sincerely don't recommend you to use Microsoft Security Essentials. Since when Microsoft is good concerning security? We always have security concerns when it comes to using Microsoft products. So the best antivirus would be either Bit Defender or EsetNod32.
Personally I'm using Nod32, and I should say its best as antivirus. So the rest is up to you.

You never realy used MSE right? So, for your prejudice, there you go: lifehac.kr/eSDfRv
And read the people's comments there.
And for this: "Since when Microsoft is good concerning security?", did you know Win 7 is more secure than any other OS? Its just that there's more virus for windows than for other OSs.
I'm not a Microsoft fanboy. I just like to make things right.

I used MSE and deployed it on many computers, I agree that is not fully a top notch but keep in mind that no antivirus can catch 100% of all threats out there. MSE is just a good freebie
Remove AVG and use Microsoft Security Essentials(google it)
Can you describe the 'freeze' in details ?
