Being found in the tropical region, Mauritius is blessed with a pleasant climate all year long depending on the particular taste of a person. There are only two seasons namely summer and winter. Summer starts in November and ends in June while winter lasts from July up to October. Summer is quite hot with an average temperature of 28˚C and plenty of rainfall while winter is cooler with an average temperature of 24˚C. In January the weather can be said to be at its worst; it is very hot (30s during the day and 22˚C at night), rainy and humid. This can make vacationing in Mauritius quite uncomfortable for those not used to high temperatures. Also, there is usually a great threat of cyclones which means that outdoor activities become limited. February (one of the rainiest months) and March follow more or less the same pattern while in April, though it is still hot and humid, the threat of cyclones goes down (28˚C during the days and 21˚C at night). In May, the temperature starts to drop with an average of 27˚C during the days and a minimum of 19˚C at night. The downpour diminishes considerably with only quick showers from time to time. The sea temperature is also ideal for swimming at about 26˚C. All in all May is one of the best times to visit Mauritius as the temperature cools down, the rain diminishes and the humidity becomes bearable. June is the onset of winter with decreasing temperatures of 26˚C during the days and nights of 17˚C. The weather gets quite windy with occasional rainfall especially on the upper parts of the island where it is coolest. The beach can still be enjoyed with warmer temperatures and less scorching sunshine. The temperature hovers around 23˚C during the days and 17˚C at night in July, August and September; the weather is windiest during these periods making surfing an ideal activity to enjoy then, especially in September when the amount of rainfall decreases too. In October, summer starts to crawl in slowly with day temperatures of 26˚C and 18˚C at night. It is quite sunny so beach trips are indeed great while at the same time it is not too hot or humid to be uncomfortable to visit the busy city and towns. In November, the heat starts to be felt with rising temperatures of 29˚C during the days and 20˚C at night. Rainfall becomes quite common and humidity increases. The weather in December can get quite uncomfortable if you are not used to unusually high temperatures (can go higher than 30˚C during the day and 21˚C at night) and it can also get really sticky with increasing rainfall. It should be noted though that December is the peak time to visit Mauritius for many tourists (getting away from cold winters!) and plane tickets must thus be booked in advance. Mauritius, because of the nature of the island, has a number of microclimates, making its weather quite difficult to predict and different from area to area. While the highlands are always cooler with more rainfall, the coasts sunnier, the east windier and the west drier, when to visit the island is more a question of personal taste and what activities you will be involved in.
