Are cars seats for babies compulsory in Mauritius?

I will be coming on holiday to Mauritius soon and hiring a car, do I need a car seat for my child? I have heard that most people do not bother with car seats but in the UK and most parts of Europe they are a legal requirement. If people don't use one what do they do, just hold the child instead?
