Things like tomatoes, coriander or chow chow (sousou) are very easy to grow and I wonder how many people actually grow their own.

Many people actually started to grow many different kinds of vegetables! Why? Simple because the cost of living in Mauritius is exorbitant! Where there were once garden of beautiful flowers, its now transformed into a small vegetable farm.

That's sad. I thought people would actually grow their own veg because it tastes much nicer without all the pesticides and chemicals but not because of rising costs of living.
We have only some 'sousou' climbing up the banana trees in the backyard at my place [Curepipe] , but Ive seen a small garden on a roof at Eau Coulee . Only part of the roof is used - about 300 sq.ft. - but the healthy looking vegetables are planted very close together and the yield seem to be high .
It's the kind of thing you do when you've got your own garden :) more and more people are now going for apartments where space is quite limited, but even then some people do grow stuff like herbs in small pots right on their balconies :)
